Women's Intro to Fly Fishing
August 7th - 9th, 2026
La Jara, CO
This retreat is ideal for women who want to gain a well rounded knowledge of what it takes to fly fish independently. If you have never been fly fishing, that’s more than okay– we have taught many first timers over the years. If you have been fishing maybe with a partner or a friend but want to start doing it solo, then this is the spot for you too!
Event Overview
Friday, August 7th: Meet one another, set up our camps along the river, and enjoy a nice dinner together.
Saturday, August 8th: In the morning we will have a slow but early morning together, learning about knot tying and casting. Throughout the day, Stella will take women out on the river in small groups so that you can gain a personal and in-depth understanding of how to read the water, how to traverse the river and how to bring a big fish in! When not fishing, you’ll be at camp with Fran, learning about river entomology, doing crafts, or relaxing however you choose.
Sunday, August 9th: If groups want to get out on the river again, there will be more opportunities in the morning. Whenever we’re done fishing we will have a farewell celebration and pack up camp.
Facilitator and Guides
This experience will be facilitated by Fran Letts, founder of Empowered to Explore. Fran is a certified Women’s Guidance Facilitator, a Wilderness First Responder, and has been professionally facilitating outdoor learning experiences for 8 years. She brings an introspective element into exploring the outdoors which allows you to more deeply connect with yourself, your intuition, and your confidence through your adventures.
Our fly fishing guide, Stella VonDedenroth, has facilitated this trip every year. Stella has been a local fly fishing guide for 5 years and as a lifetime local, she knows the area and its’ rivers very well. Stella spends her whole year teaching others, whether that be fishing, rafting, acting, skiing, or snowboarding. Because of her decade of outdoor education experience, she knows how to kindly and effectively teach folks how to conquer outdoor activities that may appear daunting.
